Situated on a small island deep inside the Okavango Delta, Pelo Camp is Jao Concession’s newest lodge, opened in mid-2013. It is surrounded by permanent, open floodplains, so focuses on water-based activities – and primarily excursions by mokoro (traditional dug-out canoe).
A welcome addition to the stunningly beautiful Jao Concession, Pelo Camp offers great value for money as a true ‘wet’ camp in the Okavango Delta. Located over in the central-eastern region of the concession, Pelo Island was once a mobile camping site and, as it was so good, has since become a simple but very charming, tented camp to use as a base for water activities. Combined with one of the more land focussed other camps in the concession, this is one of our top camps for saving on costs but having a real delta experience.
Highlights:
- Intimate, unpretentious camp.
- Pure water experience primarily floating through the Okavango channels on Mokoro.
- Located deep in the core of the Delta.
Activities:
- Water-based activities only, in 06 x 2-seater Mokoro, 01 x 9-seater and 01 x 11-seater boat (water levels permitting).
- Guided nature walks on request (subject to the availability of a qualified walking guide, therefore pre-booking is essential).
- Birding (Internationally Recognised IBA – Important Birding Area).
- Fishing on a catch and release basis (fishing is prohibited in Botswana in January and February for fish breeding purposes).
Optional activities at an additional cost:
- Scenic helicopter flights ranging in duration from 30, 45 to 60 minutes – with guest numbers as a minimum 2 and a maximum up to 5 or 6 depending on the helicopter used; half-day (morning or afternoon).
- Tsodilo Hills (UNESCO World Heritage Site) excursion to learn more about Botswana and the history of the San Bushmen – with guest numbers as a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 10.
