Doro Nawas rests on a small hill on the edge of the dry Aba-Huab River overlooking ancient plains with glorious views of the rugged Damaraland area within the starkly beautiful Doro Nawas Conservancy. This is a prime desert-adapted elephant country and clear nights offer ample opportunity for magnificent stargazing, while the ancient rock art of Twyfelfontein is a glimpse into a long-gone world. The camp provides an excellent base for exploring the local area in game drive vehicles and on foot, taking in the spectacular views, desert scenery and the wildlife including gemsbok, springbok, and occasional black rhino and cheetah.
ACTIVITIES
- Day and night nature drives in 05 x 07-seater closed Land Cruises with a pop-up roof. During winter months hot water bottles (on an early morning game drives only), blankets and lined ponchos are provided.
- A pair of Olympus binoculars is available in each of the game drive vehicles for guests to share amongst themselves whilst game viewing and may be requested from our guides.
- Birding.
- Guided nature walks and scorpion walks (weather permitting and subject to the availability of a qualified walking guide).
- Guided nature trail from camp (weather permitting and subject to the availability of a qualified walking guide).
- Stargazing with a laser pointer (weather permitting and according to the lunar phases (not offered around the full moon).
- Excursions to Twyfelfontein (including San rock engravings, Damara Living Museum (approximately 10 kilometres from Twyfelfontein), Burnt Mountain and Organ Pipes).
- Excursions to Petrified Forest, scenic drive ending with river lunch or scenic walk at “Little Table Mountain”.
- Discussions by camp staff on the Doro Nawas Conservancy, the Damara/Nama language and traditions.
- De Riet cultural village visit possible on a three-night stay or more.
